I notice Scott puts a premium on Green cancels for many classic issues. Are there limited types/shapes of cancels that could be green? Because color is so variable, my thought is to eliminate certain cancels by their type. Like the one below. Is that a shape that would have been found in green?

The circle of wedges cork cancel can be found in many colors, possibly in green. I believe that the post office required black ink black ink cancels, but smaller post offices used what was on hand. I don't recall any specific type of fancy cancel being limited to a specific color and think that the premium for a green cancels applies for any green cancel, as it was not a common ink color, brown ink is even scarcer! Although I do know thought that circled stars were struck in green ink. |

Phil,
That negative A is from Boston, not green.
As far as green cancels go, they're quite scarce and many blue cancels are mistaken for green ones. |

Because of the premium Scott places on them, I assumed they're scarce. Thought perhaps, they are limited to a particular post office and or style of cancel. |

You said green painted over black cancel, are you referring to the top stamp, or which stamp are you referring to, I'm very confused?
Thanks

There was a recent article in the Chronicle about colored cancels on 69s. |

stampmaster, I think that Kevin means that both of the "green cancels" I showed are both fake, green ink painted over black cancels. |

I used to think of green cancels as something deep like a 3c Banknote. Now I have a different sense about it. The cancel on the left in this group is blue. Though some would claim it has green in it, I don't think so. The other two are unmistakably green. |

It could be my monitor that's screwed up, but neither of those green cancels look genuine to me. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen that shade of green ink used on 19th century cancels. Are either of them certified? |

While I have nowhere near Mr. Weiss' experience here, I completely agree with him. In fact, the center stamp clearly has had the cancellation added - note the black cancellation ink at UL and LR. I have had two mentors tell me to avoid that mustard-yellow/olive-green color as it is not authentic. |

littleriverphil - The two painted green cancels sure do make an excellent addition to your reference collection. |

Hmmmm. I don't recall who sold me the one in the middle, but I got the 2c with the star from Rich Drews back when he still had his store. I suppose I should send it in to be sure. |

Yes, they are both suspect. Is there any bleed-through from either of them? Kollectorkurt makes a strong point about the black cancel traces on the middle stamp, and the ink color on both is very close, which is also suspicios. |
