Kurt, I for one would love to see a little, friendly circle of cancel collectors who love the material more than their own prestige. If you guys start something like that, count me in. I have a lot to learn.

I assume that you belong to the USCC (United States Cancel Club)?

If not, I highly recommend it. I think I've been a member for at least 40 years (though I might be off by 5 years....). In the last few years it's publication "USCC News" has gone to full color printing and is vastly superior than what it was before the change.

Moi? I joined in 2011, but it lapsed a year later due to a bit of confusion on my part. [Story deleted]

I think you are the second person in a month to remind me to get with it with the USCC (U.S. Cancellation Club). I agree. I need to get with it and rejoin and pick up the back issues. The few issues for the year I got it have been useful on several occasions. But search capabilities are all but non-existent so far, and I am so far behind the curve that I need more than the USCC is positioned to give, I think.

Apples and oranges to compare a national society with a printed journal to an online discussion group. Both have their place, but for the beginner in marcophily, the USCC might be a bit of a learning curve of itself. Then again, different strokes....

But I will say this, for anyone who thinks they might get seriously interested in fancy cancellations, definitely plan to join the USCC as early as possible, and stay with it. The journal is that good. [Don't do what I did. Do it right!]

No, I am not. When I started to collect fancy cancels in 2013, I was told that this group was inactive, their website seemed to support this information (still does), and my inquiries via snail-mail went unanswered. Was I misinformed? Are they active or just maintaining the old website?

I track down as many books as I can. I've built up a friendship with a couple dealers and pick their brains at every opportunity. Unfortunately, there do not seem to be any active fancy cancel collectors in either Detroit or Lansing, although I've been able to see some very nice inactive collections.

As an aside... Is this a good time to send some Corry Eagles in for you to examine and cert? (And my apologies if asking in this manner is a faux pas.)

kollectorkurt - I didn't outbid you on anything - I picked them out of a larger group at the Westpex show last weekend.

You were misinformed. The Club is active and vibrant. I will find out who you can contact for membership info (unfortunately I rarely keep back issues of the News. In the last issue, the retirement of the person who has been the spiritual leader of the Club and the longtime Editor of The News (Roger Curran) announced his "retirement" and I think the new Editor is Matt Kewriga. Actually (ironically...) one of the USCC officers regularly reads this forum and I'm surprised he hasn't chimed in this thread (perhaps he hasn't seen it....).

The President was John Donnes (jdonnes@cox.net) so you might try contacting him. And Matt's contact is matt@kewriga.com. Matt is a professional describer for Schuyler Rumsey auctions in San Franciso and is always a busy guy. But surely either him or John D. should respond to you. If not, let me know.....

And of course you can send me items to expertize anytime.

Perhaps the dealer then, or just an odd coincidence with one of the lots I lost out on! Regardless, you have a number a fine cancels there. You have a good eye.
