Indeed a pattern... two of my orders mysteriously disappeared...
Strip of 3 65's and block of 4 210's...
I hate to say it, but the tradition of decorating shipments with stamps has got to come to an end... it's now a theft magnet...

Any registered mail passing through that office has a very high chance of getting stolen. Normal, first class shipments stand a much better chance of arriving at their destination these days. |

Yes, registered, but I'm talking mostly about international registered shipments. I and a few others on this board alone have lost several registered international shipments going through the NY customs office in recent months. The OP didn't say one way or another, but I'm guessing that one was registered as well.
Int'l registered mail is not handled the same as domestic registered mail. It's a big problem, and I'd caution strongly against registered int'l shipments (either sending or receiving) that are destined to go through that office. I, for one, will not buy from an int'l seller who ships registered because the chances are probably 50/50 it'll never get here. This may not be an issue if they come in through a different customs office. This seems to be a problem mostly with the NY office, which is where they always seem to disappear. A registered shipment might as well have a bright neon "STEAL ME" sticker on it when it goes through that office. |

Sure wish we could microchip stamps....just like our pets. I've also heard lots of horror stories. It's not just registered. I received a letter April 9th sent from Hungry before Christmas and fortunately, it contained nothing but a letter. I agree the problem seems to originate in the New York office. Maybe its time a real investigation opened into all this "disappearing" registered mail coming into New York. |

Quote: Maybe its time a real investigation opened into all this "disappearing" registered mail coming into New York. I somewhat assume that the USPS knows about this and is investigating. When my registered item disappeared, I got a letter from the USPS that they were investigating, at least for that particular shipment. If just people on this board have experienced the same thing multiple times, the total amount of theft has to be pretty large and there's almost no way that the USPS is oblivious to it. Of course, maybe they don't have the manpower or budget to investigate, but they almost have to be aware of it. In the meantime, I'd recommend using Fedex/UPS et. al. for international shipments. The cost will be higher (probably a lot higher) but at least the item will get through. |

Quote: Registered ?
I strong doubt that...
The USPS does not track international registered mail past the point of customs in New York. That is, registered international mail is put with normal, first class mail after it clears customs and is no longer tracked. Canada Post caused quite a stir last year over the USPS policy and I wish more countries would follow suit. It seriously pisses me off to pay big money for registered mail only to have the USPS stop tracking them after they enter the US. To date, I have lost two restered shipments, both of which made it to New York. My losses are roughly $150, an amount that won't break the bank, but they are enough that I am not willing to bid on more expensive items at European auction houses for fear I might lose something much more significant. Your items are likely lost for good, Gladiators001. My sincerest condolences ... Brian |

Registered mail in the US is NOT secure. No matter who doubts that, I have had at least 3 domestic registered disappear in less than a year. It strikes me that Insured in the US is safer- at least if it gets stolen you or the seller have a chance at getting money back, assuming the USPS doesn't stonewall you.
For International shipments, many if not most countries don't offer insurance because, well...., they know a lot of stuff gets stolen. |

shermae Since registered mail carries more indemnity coverage than simple insurance, and the pieces of mail must be signed in and out at every step of their transit, I wonder if you are referring to registered mail or certified mail. Certified mail does not provide insurance but requires a signature at delivery and provides tracking. But within the US, certified mail is not the same thing as registered at all. |

Quote: Another one of the reasons I don't ship outside the US. Regular first-class shipments - both sending and receiving - seem to get through with no problems whatsoever. That registration sticker is an advertisement that there is something valuable inside, which is why the thieves focus on registered rather than first class mail. I've got no problem ordering or shipping internationally via non-registered mail for the items I buy and sell (i.e. not very expensive). Which is the exact opposite of how it should be and a perfect illustration of why the USPS needs to do something about how international registered mail is handled. I also wonder if the thieves are doing anything with the addresses of the recipients. If they score something known to be worth hundreds or thousands of dollars, that's also a tip-off that there's probably a valuable collection at that address (or at least one the thieves will think is valuable). Chances are that this information is discarded as these are probably not burglars we're dealing with, but you never know. You also never know if they're passing that information along to other criminals. |

For those who are interested, here is an article in Linn's regarding Canada Post's decision to stop registered mail service to the US Quote:Canada Post spokeswoman Anick Losier told Linn's: "Due to customer service concerns, Canada Post has suspended Registered Mail service to the USA effective January 13, 2014. The suspension does not apply to Registered Mail sent within Canada or to other International destinations. http://www.linns.com/news/postal-ne...nited-States |
