THESE ARE PERF 12 I THINK THEY ARE SCOTT #406 TYPE 1 BUT WHAT WOULD YOU CALL THE COLOR? CARMINE OR LAKE? THANKS JAMES

Hi James. It's almost impossible to determine the exact colour. Every scanner and monitor is calibrated differently, so what I see is going to be different from what the next collector see to what you see on the actual stamp.
I'd suggest you find a different stamp, meaning different design which only has one version of the colour carmine or lake and compare it to your stamp. That will give you some idea how close yours is to those colours.
For example a Scott#786, the 1937 army issue, is carmine. It may not be exactly the same carmine, different ink lots and all, but it will give you an idea.

Carmine. Lake is typically darker looking and has a bluish cast. Find a US stamp in the Scott catalog listed as lake (only) and compare.
