I clipped this from a piece of long gone mail thinking it might be a envelope stamp (U#) but now think it is a crude preprinted item that did postal use. Cancel is May 2007. To clarify it is printed onto the piece and is not really perforated. The resolution is low as well, the bottom left micro text is not legible.

There were other stamps on the envelope too. Any ideas? Is it valuable or toss it?

Would have been worth a lot more if it hadn't been clipped... As it is it'll be tougher to prove you didn't print it yourself. :(

Postal forgeries are quite collectible.

Here is another piece of junk mail with a pseudo-stamp and cancel printed onto it. I believe this one came in the weekly bundle of junk mail advertisements and not as a separate piece of bulk or presort mail, since it bears no barcoding. There is a note on the back side that this was received in June 2007. Somehow the USPS is allowing these printed mimics on junk mail similar to the ad mailings which resemble Express or Priority mail - to get our attention.

So I would not consider these to be forgeries.
Collectible? Yes!
Valuable? Maybe a few bucks on full cover.

I can't speak about the American Toleware "pseudo-stamp" as it only shows a partial piece and there's no telling if there could have been a valid stamp next to it, since it does have what appears to be a valid postmark and one would think that a handstamp postmark would have meant that the postal clerk saw the "pseudo-stamp" before postmarking the item.

As to the second example, it did not go through the mail (note no mailing address) but was simply an insert (probably included within weekly flyers for stores that we all get.) In that it did not see postal use, I would expect there to be no prohibition on the use of such an imprint. I imagine it is simply creativity on the part of the mailing house preparing the item as a means to encourage a potential client to open the "mail" by giving it the "look" of a stamped envelope.

The first item, the toleware with TBR on it, is a piece of advertising. ebay seller tbrstamps produces these & uses them on orders that he mails out. He has produced several similar items over the years. Please note that he doesn't use these as postage.

Thanks all. JLLebbert great info that makes sense to me now. I will lightly mark the backside accordingly and toss it into my definitives tissue box. I compromised its value by cutting it from the cover. I did not note the rate at the time, but there were several other stamps on cover.

For stamps that I receive used on cover out of proper period (most philatelic mail) I cut around and store the stamps in various marked tissue boxes.
