Going through an old Scott American Album for US that I picked this weekend, comparing the stamps with my Scott National Album. It appears the Scott# are backwards.

Scott #212 1c Franklin is marked as #214 3c Washington and vice versa in the American Album. There appears to be similar mistakes with the similar 1887.

The album pages appear dated, however, supplement page dated 1979 is in the American Album.

Any clue. Nothing in the specialized catalog. Seems like a misprint and not a # change.

The number for the 1c of 1887 was changed from 214 to 212 several years ago. If you look at a 1941 edition of the essay catalog by Clarence Brazer, for which the numbering system was derived from Scott, the essays for this stamp are all associated with #214.

I no longer recall the whys and wherefors of the change, but it is no longer of any consequence. Don't let it throw you.

Edit: based on an incomplete set of old cats in my collection the change took place sometime between 1947 and 1952.

Thanks. I was just about to post another anomaly with the same album. The #544 1c Washington is marked as perf. 10 whereas it is currently perf. 11. So it appears the once was #544 is now #543?

I see I'm going to have to have this information at my finger-tips since I'm purchasing whole collection now.

Here's the work in progress: http://larrysbasement.com/anomalies/

Thanks again.
