I have a lady friend at work who always jokes around with my wife about how I's a stamp collecting nerd.
Today she admitted to me that she has been collecting U.S. commeratives since the 1970's. She's what I call a closet collector.
Do any of you have a friend or relative like that?

No, but the connection with closets made me think of the late Freddy Mercury of rockband Queen. Yesterday I heard on the radio that he was a fanatical stamp collector. His collection is now in the National Postal Museum in London. |

Talking about Freddy Mercury, makes me think of another band. Has anyone heard of the band "I'm From Barcelona" a Swedish band that has done a song called "Collection of Stamps" bring it up on itunes or you tube or whatever. You should get a kick out of it. |

Of course, there is always John Lennons boyhood stamp collection. Also, one of the Rolling Stones started collecting stamps in the last few years, I think it is Ronnie Wood.
I am sure there are many closet or closed door stamp collectors out there. |

Well they were not closet collectors or I would not know it..but many hollywood actors were stamp collectors..Glen Ford and Ernest Borgnine come immediately to mind..more than a few were APS members..it was not something the APS bragged about unless the person displayed something !! |

Phil, I know that the famous or well known individuals I mentioned are not closet collectors. However, at one time they could have been because no one may have asked them or known outside of their immediate family. Sometimes we vocal & active collectors have to be the 1st ones to mention our hobby in a conversation to get others to reveal or pique their interest. |

My father, when he finally 'retired' at age 70 continued a stamp collection we had in the family for years-- he would go on a wednesday afternoon to the next town as there was a stamp seller at the markert; he told my mother he just went shopping... He put all the stamps by kind and color on the pages- some pages would have 50 of the Bismarck German stamps on it... he enjoyed it! Maybe that's where I get the collecting bug from, or was it from Phil? |
