I am new to collecting stamps and recently acquired a collection from an estate. I found a 90 cent stamp scott #39 in an envelope by itself. the stamp looks very suspect to me. Its on thick white paper with and is a perf 12. the color is very dark, almost black and the print is not very sharp. I'm thinking its a fake. Any help would be appreciated I'll try to upload a pic when I can figure it out. thanks

Kingstonstamper.....what you are showing is trial color proofs.
OP states stamp is perf 12.

edit for spelling correction.

All of the characteristics you mentioned point to a stamp that is not an authentic 39 - not necessarily a forgery. It could be a facsimile/reprint or as Kingsstonstamper eluded to - a trial color proof of the 1875 reprints (Scott 47TC) that has been perforated (to look like a 39). However, if a proof, the printing would be very sharp.

Even without seeing it, I am leaning towards facsimile/reprint.

My Scott Pocket Catalog says that #39 is Perf. 15˝, but the 1875 preprints, without gum SC# 47 is perf. 12. It also lists the color of #39 as blue, but the color of #47 as 'deep blue'. Perhaps he has a #47.

The picture is too small to offer much of an opinion except that perfs have been added to all four sides - and very sloppily, I might add. Still too early to say exactly what it is. At this point, I am leaning towards a facsimile or a 47TCP with added perfs. Hopefully, he can upload a better image.
