Trying to determine if stamp is Scott #500 deep rose. It has the type 1 scroll shading and the front of the ear seems like a vertical line. It is a perf 11, flat plate. Can not find a watermark. Need help to ID. Mike L

A better picture, preferably a scan, would definitely help us identify it correctly. From that image, it appears to be Scott #500, but again a better picture is needed to be certain. |

And preferably with a known copy of this stamp, so we can better compare colors. On my computer screen it looks like your stamps is grossly overinked!

I will scan it again at higher resolution, but scan image is limited in size that you can post.
When you are looking at the stamp, one is struck by how red it is. Will get know copy and post it side by side against ole' super red. |

@Peter I agree that it looks way over-inked, didn't know if it was just my monitor though....
@mlesage1954 It may help if you scan it on a black background BTW. Looking forward to seeing the new scan! |

It looks like a 500, but the contrast and brightness needs to get manipulated to clarify the over-scan...
PLUS a nice clear LARGE scan of the button/ribbon area...
If your scanner will go up to 1200dpi, it would be preferable to scan at that resolution... |

mlesage1954, I do not see any evidence on your stamp of small partial lines in the ribbon where you see the second line in type-III 2-cent W/Fs. Not all 500s have those lines, but many do. The toga rope and button do not look right--not strong enough. Your stamp seem out of focus, or most likely heavily inked which blurs the image, which makes it difficult to be sure, but I don't think its a 500. |

Mlesage...
After examining all of the detail in the larger scan, and using the process of elimination, this stamp appears to NOT be a 500... rather the "Full Type I" design...
Furthermore, you need to check for a watermark... if you should find single line, then it's a 461... if not, it's the 499...
To some viewers, (depending upon their monitor resolution), some may be thinking it's an offset... the process of elimination rules out offsets by details...
Lastly, the only time (I have personally) seen the "chopped" right *2* with the vertical cut where it should be an upward curve has been with the Full Type I...
------------------------------------------------------------- EDIT : One more point... viewing the arc sizes of the top and bottom perfs, they almost appear Perf 10... in which case the stamp would be a 539... however the corner to corner strongly indicates Perf 11... -------------------------------------------------------------
Tough stamp...

Your stamp is definitely perf. 11x11, Scott #499 (unless there's a watermark, as disi123 mentioned). The uneven lines in the toga rope are a giveaway that your stamp is not type 1a. It is a neat stamp nonetheless! |

Joe... if you're going through alot of 2-centers, you need to first search for watermarks (in the hopes of) finding 461's...
In the absence of a watermark, in the case of your current example, your stamp would be a 499... |

Quote: @Joe, your stamp is perforated 12, and thus is Scott #406 Positively *not* perf 12... |
