Hi everyone. The 1898 Scott 287 Trans-Mississippi Exposition Issue 4c is suppose to be a solid orange color. This used stamp with cancellation appears to have dark brown color mixed with orange on different areas of the stamp, like two colors for one stamp instead of one color. It has the original gum in back. What happened to this stamp? Does it increase in value due to the variety of mixture of color?

I agree with IBFS. And no, it does not increase the value, it decreases it! You might try to clean it up with a hydrogen bath?

so changeling decreases the value of stamp..umm interesting. the vendor placed at a higher value saying it was the printing including not commonly seen.I do not plan to touch the stamp with any added chemicals to it.

Blazenstar, the original gum won't help this stamp either. It makes it a little brittle and encourages the growth of mold.

If it has gum, then it likely was steamed from it's cover,
as opposed to water soaking...

With regards to the foxing... you can either soak the stamp
in hydrogen peroxide, or "brush" it with a cue tip dipped in
peroxide, and you'll be able to restore its color...

With regards to value, (either way) anywhere from $.25 up to
about $1.00 would be it... ($1.00 would be stretching it. given
it's overall condition)...

It is clear this dealer does NOT know his stamps. You will come to realize that some day.

John..the man has over 85 books of stamps and gets stamps every day to sell to the public and does stamp shows too...he checks his stamps the best he can with his knowledge and he does very well selling them to many people. Not everyone is a walking dictionary.. I always appreciate him..He is a very thoughtful and good man...He can make mistakes as long as he doesnot place on sheets like another vendor I met..hahahaha..I did recieve a few rare foreign stamps from him before.

Stamps like this one are called "changelings." Yellow and orange inks are very prone to oxidation and will change to brown.

There are several condition issues with this stamp that also will lower the value such as the right hand straight edge, and blunt or short perfs.
