Is there someone who can tell me if these stams are the same or different and which Scott number they have. There are several in my catalog but I can't tell the difference. Greetings from Aart in the Netherlands

Aart, if you go to www.stampsmarter.com you will see a link to the 1847usa website. It is on the homepage on the left bottom! They are really good at explaining and showing the difference between the different printings. Veel goede wensen,

Peter

I have not figured out a good way to tell apart the 2 diff kinds of paper on a picture but its obvious if you have them in hand.

jim6092252,

Since both stamps have the same Scott number, why do you think the paper is different? A saw one seller on ebay call one a Scott 150 and the other a Scott 161. How did he or she decide? The darker frame line gives it away. There is no need to look with a magnifying glass and count the vertical lines to the left or right of the vignette.

Both stamps are the re-engraved Scott 209. The quickest way to see the difference is to search ebay for Scott 139 starting with the most expensive and looking only at stamps with certificates. Then search and look for unused Scott 209 starting from the most expensive. Few sellers make the mistake of calling one of the earlier stamps a 209, but if you happen to see one and no one else does, you would have a bargain.

Scott 209 is one of the most frequently misidentified stamps on ebay.

aartw - I would strongly advise against trusting ebay as a reliable stamp identification resource. As you browse through the many topics here, you will find several common threads and one of those is how crappy ebay sellers are when identifying Classic material!

Please do spend lots of time reading the 1847usa site! It has been invaluable to me. Learn the identifying characteristics of the Bank Notes - colors, grills, secret marks. Do not beat yourself up if paper type baffles you. I still cannot tell them apart (and in truth, Continental vs National confounds even the experts)! This is despite several years of photo tutorials, face-to-face instruction, written explanations, physical exemplars -- and my vision is good and my hearing is unchanged from my baseline a decade ago!

all of the 1-10 cent big banknotes to me seem so common I always just wait till I got a bunch and sell as a lot.
