This is supposed to be brown but appears orange to me. Is this a result of oxidation?

It is the color of Scott 178 or 183 (vermilion, orange vermilion), and it IS Scott 183.

That means it would have the "small diagonal line" under the scroll. I notice the bottom of the scroll is a bit flattened. Is that the secret mark? Having a heck of time with this identification.

OK, I just found the site http://www.stampsmarter.com/1847usa...kNote02c.htm and now know the secret mark is where the underside of the scroll ball meets the scroll. On a 146 (illustration A45) it is open. On a 183 (illustration A45a) it is closed with the small diagonal line. Thanks for the replies!
