I wonder if the grill marks would be easier to see if the image was manipulated as to contrast and color. |

The points are getting lost in the mass of cancellation ink even on the reverse. I am not getting consistent, reliable counts.
Suggestion: To get around this, take an overhead shot parallel to the stamp but with the light source deeply angled from one side so the light "skims" across the surface, as it were. A portable lamp or possibly even a bright flashlight might do it. Take one shot with the light on one side, and one with it angled front to back. See which gives a better result, and let us see that. |

Jim, I am probably not the expert grill-person you are waiting for....I will give my 2c anyway. I am looking at the orientation of the ridges, vertical or horizontal. It's not easy to say for sure by the scan, but for me the ridges look vertical. Unfortunately. Seems like the row 4-5 from the top is most clearly defined with regards to the ridges. Z-grill has horizontal ridges... Again I might very well be wrong, hopefully some expert will chime in and give you more hope! Good luck.
Thanks for sharing by the way! |

I've bounded the grilled section of the stamp, as well as I can tell. Am I at all close? And can't one measure this area to determine the type of grill or does one count impressions? |

Jim, apply some graphite (pencil lead) to the back of the stamp to make the grill points stand out. Rub a pencil tip several time across a piece of paper, transfer the graphite to your finger tip, an then gently rub the graphite across the grill area. Repost a scan after and we'll be better able to help you. |

I am still learning the whole "ridge" aspect to grills, but I do see a 13/14 x 18 grill on this stamp. |
