This is a good example of the 'top label & upper right diamond block connected'. This stamp doesn't appear to have any other recuts.

My initial thought is, it's from plate 2E. The lack of guide dot narrows it down to 4 positions on the plate. Of course if the guide dot got trimmed off of the bottom, all bets are off.

Edit: none of my plating notes are written in pen

If this is a 10A, its from one of 2 positions on plate 2E. If its a 11A, it could be plate 1L or plate 2L, 2 positions on 1L and 2 positions on 2L.

Gator, how are you doing sir?

My reason for eliminating the late plates is the quality of the printing. The stamp is sharper then it appears in this scan.

I'm doing well thanks! Can't determine the color on my monitor. Doesn't look orange/brown. If your good with the color, then its a 10A. Nice copy too! Be careful assuming a sharp impression automatically makes it a 10. There are sharp impressions of 11's too. I think I've this variety on a cover, but its an 11. When I have time, (tied up on a home improvement project, keeping me way to busy right now) I'll look for it and post it.

some how I had it in my head 10a could be other than orange brown...ugh. I don't believe this stamp is orange brown. Compared to other OB's I have, this one doesn't quite cut it.
Look forward to having a look at your cover. Thanks!

Edit: to add a scan of a stamp I have as an OB. Type I with the small paid cancel...? I placed it next to the stamp in question and scanned them at the same time.

Hey, lets call it 10A copper brown (SCV $1,250.)

So..., I believe the stamp on the right lacks the orange(ish) hue.

Obviously I have much, much, much more studying to do.

I do believe your stamp is a 10A and I am pretty sure it is position 15L0. It doesn't match any of the Plate 2 positions.

The only images I have for comparison are at this site http://www.stamps4collectors.com/in...cphotos.html
The site has very few examples shown from the early plates.

With that, I don't know why I eliminated plate 0 from consideration?! I had noted that plates 2E and 0 both had positions with the Right label and diamond connected.

I do take heart in having identified it as 10A.

As always, thanks for responding.
Hopefully I'm only mildly annoying, and others might be learning from my many struggles/posts.

Stamp Crow, by now you know that the inof. from my previous post was incorrect. I was reading the information for the LEFT diamond block adjoining the label....I'll blame it on old age. More to blame on old age, I was also wrong on mine. Found it. Not on cover and not an 11. 10A position 84L2E. I think. Two lines recut in upper left triangle and label and diamond block adjoined at the RIGHT. I think, a position dot in the lower right too.

Hey, at least it was a three cent stamp...LOL

You're stamp is a brilliant example. The recuts are plain as day and overall, the quality is stunning.

I should be receiving my Carroll Chase book within the next couple days. Hopefully that will help with my learning curve.

If I may ask, what sources do you use to research these, if any?

Stampcrow, I agree with Sinclair. I checked my Chase plating prints, and your stamp is a match for 15L0 (Chase print shown at right):

Yes, I bought them from the Smithsonian. I have some duplicate sheets that I could sell if you want a starter set.

Hmm. . . I just flipped through my box of Chase prints, and found a full set, but not the duplicates I'm almost certain I have. Gotta go through some basement boxes to see if I can find the duplicates. I initially ordered a short set; Plates 1L, 2L and 3, I think, because they were so expensive. Then I bought the full set after that because there was a discount for ordering the full set.
