Hey guys what do you think of these? The message at the bottom states " This sheet of stamps was printed from the first plate used in manufacturing the Ely Whitney postage stamp of the famous American series and was sold to Oscars Johnson president on the national cotton council of America at savanna Georgia on October 7 1940 Signed by third assistant postmaster general , post master, and philatelic agent Can't make out signatures The other piece of paper states it's from the first Roosevelt sale Feb 4th and 5th 1946 No clue what these are or a possible value, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Quote: " This sheet of stamps was printed from the first plate used The wording is tricky.... "first plate used".....there was only 2 plates. Makes this common. Signatures??....very few collectors save these which makes for a tough sell.... Sorry, not much value. AS IS....$25?? (my opinion) |

So being from FDRs personal collection doesn't increase the value at all? |

Quote: So being from FDRs personal collection doesn't increase the value at all? That actually gives some value to it being from FDR's personal collection. The sheet itself sells for $18 on ebay. There is actually not a huge demand for items from FDR's personal collection, so a value of $25 is not out of line. |

KGB, I assumed this was already in the OP's possession, so he'd already have the frame. But you are right to call attention to it. The frame would have some value I didn't consider. It might not be much, or it might be more than the philatelic items. But don't ask me what the frame's worth 'cause I don't know.

I appreciate the help guys I was actually approached by a local dealer who offered quite a bit more than your estimate so I'm assuming it has something to do with FDR's initials being in the bottom corner I appreciate the help thank you! |

Can you scan where FDR signed the sheet? FDR's huge collection of stamp items (sent to him from all over the world) was auctioned off after his death by HR Harmer. The majority of the lots were purchased by stamp dealers and as a general rule, his covers and stamps have little real world value (they are very easily attainable). However, if this item is signed by FDR and others personally involved with this stamp, it may put it in a different ball park. |

Right you are Jenny2U. I have a FDC that is stamped by Harmer as being in the FDR collection. Not signed, and has a diminished value as a result.

I'll be home and able to post pictures very shortly. I contacted the dealer and ask him to pretty much explain the value to me he was actually very open about it the FDR initialed corner is what interest him as well as the fact that it states it was presented to the president of cotton at the time in 1940 so it pretty much has nothing to do with the stamp itself he wants it because it was FDRs and initial and 2 because it was actually designated as being sold to a particular political figure out the time

FDR's initials look similar to other examples on the web, but should be authenticated. What's typed next to his signature? This likely is a special item, but we can only see a small bit of what might make it special. |

I do need to look into authentication, the message that is typed out is what I put up top in my original post about it being sold to the cotton president in savannah on the release day for the stamp, which would make sense with who is on the stamp. What makes me curious is was it a gift to FDR soon after?

As you've probably guessed, the value of this will be in the FDR "signature." And that requires expertise/authentication that has little or nothing to do with philately, so I doubt if you will learn what you are seeking here. |

Speculating, but it appears Oscar Johnson could have used his influence to obtain the "FDR" signature. Maybe at Warm Springs which is also in Georgia.
