Ran across this stamp and noticed that the partial cancel has Ohio spelled backwards. Anyone out there know when and where this happened ?

Cute. But a very nice looking stamp.

Having the state name against the killer makes me wonder if the townmark portion got rotated or flipped somehow when they were setting the device.

Yes, it would be nice if more of the CDS were showing. Just wonder if any of the postmark guys have seen this before and might know what town and when it may have happened ? If I were sure it was applied by a Schermack machine it would limit the potential towns, but it may have been applied by hand, considering how the postmark is aligned.

It is perfectly correct. Yours could be from one of several cities, but here is an example from Cleveland showing how OHIO reads around the arc of the machine cancel dial.

Here is an example of a Perfection cancel dated 1911 from West Unity Ohio where the Ohio slug was inserted upside down to create a true OIHO efo

.

Kcaramat,

Let me offer an alternative explanation. The stamp was affixed horizontally.

Your image shows the killer (the wavy lines) going vertically down the stamp. Machine cancels don't do that. They cancel horizontally across the envelope.

If you rotate your picture 180 degrees, you can see OHIO in the CDS, correctly spelled, in the same relation to the killer as John's example. The only difference is that yours has a "1" in the killer and John's example has a "2".

Experienced stamps need a home too. I'd rather have an example that is imperfect than no example.
