I got this today. The right stamp appears to be a full type 1, while the left does not, and has a deep rose color not unlike Scott #500's. Is this unusual for #409's?

It is not unusual for #409 to show strong design characteristics including the rope and button. #409 does have Rose and Carmine Rose as a listed color.

blazenstar, Thanks!

Al E. Gator, Is it normal for line pairs to have noticeable differences in design, as these do?

I wonder if the differences you're seeing are from plate wiping or inking differences?

Left stamp looks a bit heavier inked than the right, and perhaps one of the two designs was rocked into the plate with slightly different pressure causing a slight difference in depth of design? I think, to me, it seems to be more of an inking issue giving the impression (appearance) of a difference.

??????

You just got it, and a day later it is offered for sale on ebay?

Apparently you did not buy it alone. Or was there a problem?

The stray mark on the right stamp and the placement of the Schermack hyphen holes so close to the design would put me off, but not if I was after a line pair like this.

It came in a lot with other stamps (none as nice as this one though). I buy small collections/lots, break them up, and put the better ones on ebay. I enjoy owning nice stamps for a time, and then reselling them for others to enjoy. At some point I'll settle down and build my collection, but for now I am content to simply have a few nice stamps for a time and then see them go to other collectors who are looking to fill holes in their albums. Personally, this is what I really love about the hobby.

After staring at the photo of these stamps for a time, I noticed that Washington's lower chin area on the left stamp has an extra "lump" that the right stamp doesn't have. Also, just below his ear looks a bit different. Just a couple more noticeable differences....

Could this still be simply an inking issue?
