Lately I've become really obsessed with identifying Washington-Franklin issues. I keep referring to a number of on-line sources (most of which I've accessed through this forum) which are helpful but I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a book that deals with this subject. I find the most difficult part in the ID process is identifying the stamp as to type. Any recommendations would be helpful. Thanks, John R

If "identifying the stamp as to type" is your biggest challenge, then I'd recommend the Expert's Book by Paul Schmid. Large illustrations and details for each area to examine. You'll never make another mistake identifying types if you have that book :-)

More expensive and harder to find is "The Washington Franklins 1908-1921" by Martin A Armstrong. It is about as comprehensive as you can get on this complex issue.

Armstrong's book is an excellent reference. I also like THE UNITED STATES POSTAGE STAMPS OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY" Volume I, 1901-1922 by Beverly S. King and Max G. Johl © 1937. I use both. Both books are available from Phil Bansner. http://www.philbansner.com

Edit: Sorry, Bansner only has the THE UNITED STATES POSTAGE STAMPS OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY books in stock.

Hold the Press! There's more, jmdregs.

There are three more books that come to mind regarding Washington Franklins.

1) The Experts Book by Paul Schmidt
2) Identification Guide to US Stamps by Charles Micarelli
3) Types of the Two and Three Cents Washington Series of 1912-21 by W V Kentworthy

I would definitely purchase these books in the reverse order presented.

"Tips on Types" by Robbin Dick is a very helpful booklet on the different types of the 2 and 3 cents.

I know I'm adding to this thread a little late, but like srail, I like The Expert's Book by Paul Schmid. Mine is chock full of notes I have added over the years. I find it invaluable.

I digitized Paul's Exert Book for him and it is available on CD as a searchable PDF. For a while this was available on ebay from Bill Weiss but obviously this is no longer true. I know I burned a large lot of these CDs for Paul and I am sure he still has some for sale. (If not I can get him some more .) But I do not think that Paul is selling them on ebay, if anyone is interested in buying this eBook from Paul let me know and I will get you his email address.
