Hello,

I am not a plating person but I have the Chase book and have begun the process of learning some of the basics. I collect dated cancels of #11 and as I record them I look for any interesting recuts and try to see if I can narrow down plating information. I am interested in thoughts on this stamp.

What I see -
1. Appears to be Relief A
2. Upper Right diamond block appears to be connected to Upper right triangle
3. Top frame line extends out beyond right frame line
4. Extra line inside the Right frame line running from bottom of stamp up to about the middle of the stamp

I have added some close ups to help show some detail. Still learning how best take and load photos. I used Scanner for full view stamp above. (600 DPI is all I can get). I used Dino Capture for close up photos below. Not as proficient with that tool as I would like to be.

Details of upper right corner.

Details of right frame line

Assuming what I see is correct, is this enough information to plate this stamp. Inputs, comments, corrections are appreciated.

Probably a Plate 2L stamp. Color looks to be a '52 brownish carmine and the cancel is probably February of that year. The faint inner line at right may be indicative of a reentered plate. Plate 1L stamps are easy to spot. There is some chance that it is Plate 3 but I doubt it.

The line connecting the diamond block and the triangle is pretty normal and visible on the best printings.

The extra line at right is actually the line on the transfer roll that was supposed to transfer to the plate. They never did and that is why all framelines needed to be recut by hand.

Hobsun013,

The plate position is probably 30R2L, but it's hard to confirm because the only image that shows the full stamp is lower-resolution, and it is slanted. 30R2L should have one vertical line recut in the upper left triangle, but I can't make that out in your first image.

Can you show a detail image of the upper left triangle, and a larger, better-resolution image of the whole stamp?

Just to be clear, you mean both the #11's. Meaning 11 and 11A.

Stampcrow - yes for clarity both 11 and 11a.

Classic Coins - below is a up close view of the top left (with Dino Scope). Scanner will only do 600 DPI for full view. Looks like it may be two lines recut in triangle but not sure. Hope this helps.

Sinclair - thanks for the detail on the frame lines this makes more sense vs extra recut lines.

Stampcrow / Sinclair / Classis coins - BTW, I am gaining additional information and enjoying the exchange on a similar currently active thread from stampcrow regarding plate positions for these. Thanks.

Hobsun013,

Thank you for the detail of the upper left triangle. I don't see one line recut as I expected to. Perhaps the recut line was shaved off when the stamp was cut from the sheet. Due to the low resolution, I can't see where the edge of the stamp is.

Below is what the upper left triangle looked like in early impressions of #10 and #11. It shows two vertical lines in the upper left triangle as well as two curved lines in the triangle. Note: NONE of these four lines are recut lines. These lines are from the original transfer roll. Only after these fine lines wore off the plate (very quickly) were the lines recut. What I am seeing in your upper left triangle detail image are the four original lines from the transfer roll, but I can't confirm the vertical recut line.

For comparison, here is a #11A with the left half of the upper left triangle worn off the plate, then recut with three vertical lines. The original vertical lines from the transfer roll are gone, but the right portion of the two curved lines is still visible:
