The Finsterwalde issue is a Cinderella sold in 1946 for the rebuilding of Finsterwalde. It will not be listed in Scott, and I don't see it listed in my Michel Deutschland Spezial 2005 Volume 1.

The "Finsterwalde" stamp is a stamp from the town of Finsterwalde (great name, it translates to "Gloomy Forest" ), issued 1946 after the war (a local issue).
There are only 12 stamps from Finsterwalde, this is Michel number 4.

The one with "Volksstaat Württemberg" is an official from Württemberg.

Both the "Thüringen" and "Leipziger Messe" are from the Soviet Zone, from 1946.
The Thüringen one is Michel number 115. It's value for postage was 24 Pfennig, 76 Pfennig were used for the rebuilding of bridges.
The Leipziger Messe is Michel number 163A. This one is available with two different watermarks or without.

EDIT:

The Finsterwalde issue is a Cinderella

I don't know if it can be called a cinderella, as it could be used as postage for some time.

Hi Drudenfus,

Need your help again. What section of Michel catalog were the Finsterwalde issues? Unfortunately, my Michel only goes up to 1945. Thanks!

Below is a picture of Finsterwalde from one of the websites.

I didn't know that it could be used as stand-alone postage. On the boards/websites I frequent, they were always listed as Cinderellas.

So thanks for the correction, Drudenfus! In the future, I'll be keeping an eye out to see if I can find some on cover examples. Thanks again!

k

They are listed in "Deutsche Lokalausgaben ab 1945". They sorted the local issues alphabetically.

I'll try and translate, what my Michel says on this:

"Due to obscurities in the process of approval, sale of Mi.Nr. 1-12 and block 1 and 2 was disabled between February 2nd 1946, 6 p.m. and March 27th 1946, 3 p.m.; during this time the stamps didn't possess a postal value. The written permission of the central administration in Berlin bears the date March 29th, 1946. The clichés were destroyed March 16th, 1946.

Valid until February 18th and from March 27th to 31st, 1946."

I hope that's helpful

Thanks so much khj and Drudenfus. Where is Gloomy Forrest located? I traveled quite a bit while there from 1998-2006.

I re-examined the Finsterwalde stamps. I only now realize they are like semi-postals. I never noticed the charity value (e.g., "+4pf" in the example Jdgarst0720 showed)! So obviously they should not be called Cinderellas!

Definitely learned several new things today!

Thanks Jdgarst0720 for posting the pics, and Drudenfus for the correction!

Finsterwalde is located near Cottbus, about 90 kilometers north of Dresden.

EDIT:
And I just noticed, that "Sonnewalde" is right next to it, which would be "Sun Forest"
Someone was really creative there

I have been to Cottbus, and all the street signs were in German and Polish, too. It was most interesting. I sang an audition in the nice opera house- but didn't get hired! Schade.

The "Cinderella" definition is up for interpertation. But the most common useage of "Cinderella" 'any stamp not included in a 'General' catalog.'

My geography is bad. I always need someone to point it out on a map.

PS -- Drudenfus, thanks for taking the time to do the translation from Michel; it was VERY helpful

I agree.

However, just to keep things easy, I usually default to the definition used in Linn's World Stamp Almanac --

"Cinderella -- Stamp-like label that is not a postage stamp..."

But just because Linn's defines it that way doesn't mean the rest of us define it that way!

Finsterwalde is south or Berlin and west of Cottbus.
