It's hard to tell from your scan, but I would bet your stamp is discolored from exposure to elements. Violet ink was very vulnerable to discoloration during this period.

To me it looks as if it has been exposed to strong sunlight causing the fading.

I'm looking at a page in my stock book that contains approximately 100 3 cent Washingtons. I see a multiplicity of shades that deviate from violet including several greys.
