I posted this in the "U.S. Covers" section. I was puzzled that it lacks a town or city in the postmark. Member paperhistory mentioned, "Philadelphia carrier department on locally delivered mail". I cannot find any information for, or examples of, this postmark. Any thoughts?
There's a three volume catalog of Philadelphia postmarks by Tom Clarke that would probably identify this with some detail. Also possible that there is coverage of Philadelphia carrier markings in the USPCS Chronicle somewhere...or even the Cole banknote cancel book for that matter.
I have the first and third volumes of Tom Clarke's catalog and did not find it in either. The second volume became available just this morning from Phil Bansner and I ordered it. When it arrives I will check it for you. I will pass around a copy of your cover at the Philadelphia Stamp And Collector's Club meeting next week. I should see Tom Clarke there and I will ask him to look at your cover. I checked my other reference books and have not seen an example of the marking.
I asked Norm Shachat if he could identify the marking. Here is his response.
"Vince, It is a well known Philadelphia marking used in the early 1870's on local mail. In Clarke Vol. 1, it is # 125 on page 28. It was also used as a backstamp (receiving mark) on incoming mail (primarily foreign mail) and that use is listed in Clarke Vol. 2 as R8 on page 14-3. Hope this helps. Norm" I just saw on your other post about this marking that Richard Frajola responded and he has a little more insight about your marking.
