Dr. Carroll Chase, The 3¢ Stamp of the United States 1851-1857 Issue issued in 1929, revised in 1942, then reprinted with a new forward in 1975 is still the standard in use today.

Thank you, Classic Coins, for the info and thanks also to cjp/stampcrow for the reference to the Chase book. Need to allocate more time to reading and researching versus just acquiring. Wealth of information on this forum-thanks for sharing.
