I purchased several stamps in a lot unseen and as I was going through it ran across a Scott #114 Locomotive. However, instead of being ultramarine in color, the stamp is green. Can anyone tell me was there any color change variations during printing? Or is it possibly just a darkened ultramarine? Thanks for any info you can provide.

There were no green #114. There are essays (#114-E6) in different colors, including green.

Thanks 51studebaker for the reply, question is how to tell the essay from the original. Also would it be beneficial to have sent to be expertized?

The #114-E6 green essay catalogs for around $80, usually sell on ebay for around $45. I would not bother to send it in for a cert.

If it is truly green, it is an essay. The #114 did not have green color variety. Here is an ebay link for some of the Pictorial Issues of 1869 essays

On the essays the numeral in the shield is smaller than on the finally issued stamp.
