short time ago I started collecting US local postage stamps. Unfortunately many reprints and forgeries exist. Can somebody answer is this stamp genuine or reprint according to details on the picture below.
According to scotts, this local stamp was established by J.H. Whiley to deliver mail in Washington, Georgetown, and Baltimore. There are two types..Type 1..Courier's letters point to "O" of "ONE". Type 2..Letters points "N" of "ONE" 1856..112L1- Washington, D.C. Inscribed at bottom "Washington City" for the 1c violet. 112L2- Baltimore, Maryland.".No name at the bottom" for 1 cent red. For the color red design of this local stamp, it appears to have "Washington" written at bottom instead of blank area noted for the 112L2. Maybe someone may able to give more information, however, it is not same markings reported for the Scott's description of the stamp.
This is one of the forgeries listed in Larry Lyons' incredibly comprehensive 3 volume (YES!, 3 volumes!) "The Identifier for Carriers, Locals, Fakes, Forgeries and Bogus Posts of the United States", which is a must-buy set of books if you are going to swim in the dangerous waters of local issues as there are far more fakes than genuine examples. The Scott Specialized catalog is completely inadequate for collecting locals.
If you collect all locals then pick up the 3 volume set by Larry Lyons-you won't regret it. "The Identifier for Carriers". You can find each volume separately if you can't afford the complete set.
