I recently got a bunch with this type of oddity. The two below are both 5c, but I have many of various denominations. Haven't come across an explanation so far with a cursory search. I am asking for what caused them. I have a theory, but want to hear your theories. Thanks!

Why don't you tell us what you consider "odd" rather than making us guess. I see nothing really out of the ordinary. But, I assume that you mean the vertical lines at the top. Not unusual on stamps of this era. Most likely a case of bad wiping of excess inks.

Partime,
When I noticed the typo, I was too tired to find how to correct it. I hadn't needed to make a thread title change before. Now I know how to do so.

-----------

Glenn Estus,
You're right, it's apparent that I should have been more specific. I intended to elicit replies discussing any of the many differences between these two Scott #504. The main similarity being the vertical streaks occurring above the top frame lines.

Differences include:

-How things such as poor wiping lead to the streaks, yet there are white areas in the right vertical frame line of the second stamp? Also, those white areas seem to have a pattern similar to the 2c Type III that exhibit excessive wear.

-Why does the first stamp have significant distortion over the left most third much more than the rest of this stamp?

-Why is it that the streaked ink due to poor wiping is not consistent? If it was due to wear in the wiping tool, then why are the streaks not consistent in the vertical axis. If it was due to uneven wiping tool pressure, then why are the streaks not consistent along the horizontal axis. Et cetera.

Possibilities include: over-inking, dried ink, double transfers, plate wear, and many others.

I left my intent vague for the purpose of eliciting any and all observations and thoughts. A thought exercise to discuss the mechanics of these minutia of printing variations that everyone can participate in.

If anyone is having difficulty seeing what I am referencing, then let me know and I'll gladly create an image pointing to those areas.

A joy to have seen your posts Ryan.

Have said several times to Patty,
I miss DNA, we were hoping that all is well!

Thank you again for being the first to welcome me
on SCF. You said "stay and you will learn". Something
like that. I did stay and can say I have learned many things.

Thanks! You did turn on the light for me!

I wish I could offer an opinion on your 504's.
The first thing that we saw were the streaks.

I thank you all for the warm welcome back into the fold. It's apparent that it will take me some time to reintegrate. I hope to soon contribute to the community as much as it has helped me. Thanks again.
