Hey All,
I have three of the 1c. Ben Franklin stamps. They are not in the best shape - that I know, but would like to confirm my presumptions. I don't have much experience in dealing with these issues, but Scott 9, 9, and 24? Thanks, Will

The one on the right is #24, relief F. The one in the middle looks like it probably is #9 (the ends of a recut frame line appear to be visible at top), but requires closer examination to be sure. The one on the left is a trimmed #24, relief C (wide break in top frame line, plate scratches at right).

Thanks for the information Dudley. I suspected one or more of the "imperforate" stamps may have been trimmed. What resource do you use that explains "reliefs"? They are beyond the scope of Scott's U.S. Specialized catalog.

Mortimer Neinken's book on the One-Cent 1851-57 issue is the standard published reference. It's offered in a free on-line version by the US Philatelic Classics Society: http://www.uspcs.org/resource-cente...ic-library/. See Chapter XVI for a study of the reliefs on the Type V stamps.

If you look at my past postings, in Jan 2014, I explained how to ID reliefs A, B, E, and F. Didn't get to C and D. Those would all be Type V reliefs.

Might be helpful for you also. Thanks, Ray
