Hey Guys! How do you sort out all the cut variations of the Liberty bell, and flag variations? In Scott, I found some variations of color, print or corner(rounded or flat). Any other way to determine which variation cut it is?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Jd,

It's this stupid Englishman here again with another question about the American English !!

What's a 'Cut variation' ???

You mentioned Flags and anyone that mentions Flags gets my immediate attention

I collect all the US Flags including Plate Nos and was interested in your question.

LondonBus:

It takes a Canadian to translate American English to the Queen's English (we speak both, and Canadian English!). JD is referring to the self-adhesive stamps which have simulated perforations on them. Since the stamps are like stickers, they are DIE CUT for easy removal. JD is referring to the DIE CUT VARIETIES, listed in Scott's catalogue.

Think of these simulated perforations not looking like teeth, but rather waves or mountains. The catalogue refers to the "bumps" as "peaks" and the "dips" as "valleys".

Scott notes that some of the stamp's die cuts start with peaks and some with valleys.

The peaks can be measured with a perforation guage, just like regular perforations. so you will see American self-adhesive stamps being refered to as having "die cut 11.5".

I hope I have made this clearer for you.

JD:

I do not collect the varieties of the Forever Libery Bell, and some of the more modern American definitives, but I get a few of them on letters. Would you like me to save them for you so you can root through them for varieties? I collect U.S.A. so you could trade me whatever you think is fair for them.

Cheers!

David

David,
Yes, but it was already clear ! Having collected all these varieties of the US Flags for some time, I certainly knew all about the peaks and valleys and rounded corners etc. It was just the terminology that threw me !!

Maybe I should live in Canada

Londonbus1.....except it's too cold in winter !

Hey David-

I wondered if you could use the perforation gage! I would appretiate the Forever stamps. Let me know, please. Thanks for "translating" for me, too!

Any perf guage in increments of 1/10th will work best for you.

Will save the FOREVER defins for you.
