How do you seperate one of the new self adhesive stamps? I have the soaking down from when I collected as a kid, but that was near 40 yrs ago.

Don't soak in warm or hot water the ink/colors can bleed. If I've heard correctly cold water maybe best it's slower but ink won't run. I know a few others are more up on this and will chime in after awhile with their thoughts. |

JayR......
Some of the new stamps are absolutely un-soakable.....there are several discussions that have lists posted.
Most collectors are just trimming the cover paper then hinging or mounting them still attached. |

My experience shows that the recent glossy ink USA Christmas stamps are absolutely impossible to soak off paper. When attempting this the ink "cracks" and a beautiful stamp becomes downright hideous. It seems that the ink will not expand, be it ever so miniscule, with the expansion of the stamp paper when soaked. Nor have I had success with liquid "Stamp Lift". |

Linn's Stamp News keeps an up-to-date list of the self-adhesive United States stamps that will fall apart, will not soak-off, etc. might be worth checking out before attempting a soak.
I just trim them, now.

I have tried soaking a few used ones off envelopes. Just ends up a mess. |

Maybe we've been too hard on the USPS for its decision regards the ending of the specification for a water soluble layer. I think its clear that not enough was being done to combat fraud. Although not totally relevant to the issue of soaking for reuse, I have recently had the experience of soaking a handful of US stamps randomly grabbed from clippings and I found four modern flag stamps that faded significantly in a warm water soak. |

Good points, Craig. By the way, wasn't there a poll here recently where a bunch of folks confessed to soaking and reusing uncanceled stamps. I seem to recall the discussion continued on to evaluating the best brand of gluesticks for defrauding the postal service ... I wonder if any postal inspectors are members of SCF ??? |
