Hello - Interest In Stamps Around The World

I never was interested in stamp collecting but I do like seeing things from the past.

My mom was a stamp collector and so far my favourite part is stamps from over the world that she collected I assume from when she worked in a post office.

My mom and I are from Alberta, Canada so most of her stamps are from Canada.

The hard part is trying to figure out the dates as I'm curious to how old some of these stamps are. I just find it interesting to see things from our history.

So I hope to learn more about stamps and look at other stamps people have posted!

Edit: Just learned more about cancellations on stamps and now I'm intriqued as some stamps has had markings on them. Stamps sure haave more to it then I thought.

Welcome Marylin! Sounds like you have a good start with your mother's collection. Where to start? I think a great place is downloading, printing and working with the One Stamp for Every Country album. It is a great overview and introduces you to the possibilities.

You can download the pdf file for the album here. Use some heavy weight paper ... i.e. 64lbs or so. If printed on both sides, the album will fill a 2" 3-ring binder. It is a fun exercise to get started.

I also found that including the two binders which lists the stamps around the world (she placed stamps over the greyed out stamps), she also has tons of envelopes of these countries.

And I noticed people talked about books like "Scott" and luckily my mom has a few books the most recent one being 1988. Even a book on how to collect stamps lol.

And I'll be checking out these links too for sure!

A 1988 Scotts Catalog is still a very valuable reference,... and I suspect the values have not changed all that much.
