Okay, at least a grand time has been had by me...
After several weeks of worrying about what I was going to do with all the "stuff" I
inherited from my Dad, what U.S. album to buy to build out a collection combining my stamps with his, how to mount Showgard, etc, etc, etc, I finally just started picking through some stamps and mounting them in the new albums.
I started with the early fifties commemoratives which are some of my favorites. After not really even looking at my album for over twenty years, the memories came flooding back. I remember sitting in my neighbors' den looking through her dupes and picking out stamps until my allowance was spent! If I was lucky, she would show me her Zepplins or stamps from some exotic country that seemed unimaginably far from Charleston, West Virginia. I remember my Dad occasionally taking me to his stamp club meetings where there were literally piles of stamps on tables to look through.
I also sadly remember when I was in my twenties, my Dad would always want to show me his latest treasure or offer me a copy of the new USPS philatelic catalog, and although I feigned interest, he knew that I had moved on to other things. I'm on the other end of that now when my 16 year old starts looking at her iPhone as I try to show her some treasure from the past.
I think that my Dad would appreciate the memories that are being stirred up and the fact that I am working on what is now our collection - although all these years later I still feel like I'm going to be scolded for messing with his stuff!
Thanks to everyone here that has helped get me started!
