So I have started the project of trying to plate the entire Plate 1Late. I'll upload any cool tidbits I get, but here is one that has me stuck.

It's Type A, single, not great margins...so I know it might not be able to be definitely plated. Hopefully, someone can spot something I missed. I don't see a split top line, plate cracks, double transfer, or even any definite plating marks. Based on just the length of the recuts, 17R is possibility (Neinken's shows a line above the E of CENTS, but Doporto's site has a weak copy that doesn't show the line and also shows a weak ornament 'S' -- which my copy also has). Any help is appreciated!

Welcome to the club, lukusw! Warning: I'm working on my second plating of Plate 1 Late; the first go-round took me 18 years to complete.
I agree that 17R is a good bet for this example, but based on the photo others might also be in the running (32R, for example). Poorly margined A reliefs can be very frustrating. I rely on multiples to help capture A Relief positions that might not lend themselves to certain identification as singles.

Thanks, Dudley! I'm trying to just pick up plate-able cheap copies on ebay right now, but I've already learned a few things (such as be wary of the solitary Type A copy). Second plating! I'm impressed. Have you tried any other plates of the 1c Franklin? Did you insist on getting copies with the center-line and the imprint captured to complete the look of the final plate?

lukusw, I am specializing in this issue generally so am collecting all types. I am organizing this collection by Plate and Position, but am not trying to recreate the look of the original printed panes as such, which means plated examples on cover are included. I am always on the lookout for examples showing the center line, inscription and layout dots as well as side, bottom and top sheet margins, etc.

I had a few collections built up since childhood but sold them all about 10 years ago. One of these was a Plate One Late replating. I had always had a particular liking for this stamp, and one day many years ago I came across a copy of the Neinken book in a used book shop. So I thought let's see what this plating business is all about. I looked at the copy of Scott #9 in my US collection, and lo and behold it turned out to be 91L1L, one of the inverted triple transfers. Well, this plating business is pretty easy and fun, isn't it ... ? So off I went, and 18 years later had a complete replating. When I returned to collecting about two years ago I decided to devote my time and resources to this single issue.
