I had bid on this stamp and am relieved now to have been outbid.

The more I looked at it, I thought it may be magic marker.

My first thought was a witch, maybe Salem Massachusetts?

This seller's listings always state, "Some stamps could be expertly restored, regum, or repaired." Take their word for it, there are plenty of better sellers.

NY Stamps. Another pitfall for the unwary. They have been discussed repeatedly here. Buyer beware!

Thanks Don & redwoonrandy,

You are both right on the mark with the warning. I have read a number of warnings referring to NY Stamps. I will try to use caution when looking at their listings. Maybe avoiding them would be a better idea.

I am still curious about the ? postmark. Do you think that it is just
a drawing with a marker?

Does look odd, but could be a fountain pen from the era. I would consider it a pen cancel, which may or may not be in-period. NOT a fancy cancel by any means... (even extreme Rorhschach enthusiasts shouldn't try to defend it).

Thank you all.

orstampman, My need to acquire more knowledge, far exceeds my need to
buy stamps I know little about. I do not have enough control. Maybe there is a program for stampaholics like me.

I am glad to have been outbid, and to have stayed outbid on this one.
