It's Scott #209. The Scott catalog is the standard for numbering in the US--sellers/buyers like Mystic use Scott catalog numbers.

Thank you. I cannot see the difference with my untrained eye. Thanks to everyone who posted I have a bunch of stuff to go through, from this 209 Jefferson to 1959 Vietnam,1925 Cuban, postcards 1900's, first day issues, sheets (some stuck together) and blank pages with loose stamps all over the dining room table. I'm gonna need a bigger boat ( jaws reference )

Agreed, Scott 209. Kripp, to id this stamp, count the number of vertical lines between the oval around Jefferson's head & the left frame of the stamp. While there are other stamps of the same design, only 209 has only 4 vertical lines. All others have 5. Once you can examine one of the other Jeffersons for comparison, the difference becomes obvious.

Way too complicated. The re-engraved 209 has dark border relative to the design while a 139, 150, 161, 187 or 188 has a relatively light border.

Yes, it's true that with experience you can recognize a 209 at a glance without counting lines (209 is in general darker in shade and sharper in impression than the other numbers with this design), but for those without such experience distinguishing criteria that are actually quantifiable are probably more useful.

While on the subject, we just looked at this stamp so when I read this thread to my Patty, she recalled reading about the secret mark and a grill helping to also ID this design. Since we just scanned this stamp,
we wanted to ask regarding our identification. We opted for design A49a
# 161. With the secret mark, small semi-circle in the scroll at the right end of the upper label.

It's a soft paper stamp, so, Scott #188.

Thank you Winston,

We did see that the # 188 also has the secret mark.

Again the # written on the back, may be a clue, but not to be trusted!
