We need help to identify this Black Jack.
Is it Scott 73 or 103, or maybe something else.

Any help would be appeciated.
James is sweating on the answer.

Steve that looks like a Scott #103 with the hard white paper, the paper on the #73 seems to be a little more greyer, can't see any grills on it so I don't think it's a variation.
I'm sure someone will point it out if I'm wrong
If it's a #103 that is a nice pick up for Bandicoot

While you wait for the experts commments, you could check the www.1847usa.com page. The home page has a list of articles on the right. Paper types is one of the articles. According to the site, scott 114 is printed on hard white paper so make a comparison with one of those if you have it.

I just went googling. Check this page: www.mostlyclassics.net/phila...kJackDies.pdf

Thomas Kendall, author of the document on the website claims that die 3b was used only on the #103 and is the only Black Jack with 3 positioning dots; both upper corners and bottom right. Your stamp looks like a good candidate. Keep us informed,

Marty

But, not to get your hopes up too high, I do not see a "star" on the left cheek to the right of Jack's nose. the 3b die has a star. The dots are called layout dots, not positioning dots as I said in my previous post.

Trigger....

Odds say it's a #73 not a #103......but...I've beaten the odds a few times, maybe it's your turn.

When I bought this stamp it did have another B/jack on the same page.
I bought the 2nd one closer to the bottom of this very old book and if it is a 73, then the stamp must have been put in the wrong place to start with.
I will be going back there with Steve in a few weeks to have a close look at the other stamps he has.
Thanks for all the help guys.

I researched more on Black Jacks and even had a reply from the author who did a major study on Black Jacks and the Dies used for printing. Unfortunately, he told me beyond doubt that yours is Die 1. Die 1 is not a Scott #103. A lack of dots in the scroll to the right of the left number "2", no "star" on Jack's left cheek and the broken outer curved line on to the left (Jack's right) of Jack's ear clinches the fact that it is a Die 1 stamp. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news
