Hi
These stamps have paper on back. Do I have to remove paper to see grill marks and tell which stamp is which? There are many choices for these stamps.

Also - What colors are these stamps? There are so many . How can you tell since the stamps are over 100 years old and fade?!!

Thanks
Elisa

Hi Elisa, I collect and study this issue. The best way to ID shades is to collect on cover with year dates. Each year in each part of each year the stamp was printed with different shades because printing in inks or not perfect in the 1860s. 55 different shades have been identified although they are not in Scott and images are not available online anywhere.
Even with dated covers, it's impossible to ID shades foment a image, since my monitor won't see the same color yours does.
So hate to be the bearer of sad news, but I've been collecting these for years it's even difficult for me to identify color.
If you search for posts that I have made over the past few years I have posted many of the shades of the 1861 3 cent stamp. Good luck hope it helps, Ray
