In the continuing story of my latest interest, US Classics, I present this #36. It has centering typical of that period and is the perforated cousin to the #17 I posted last week.

According to Stamp Smarter(a great website) it was used to pay for heavy letters. Does anyone have one on a cover?

I would say they are more closely related than cousins. More like twins with different personalities. The 17 and the 36 come from the same plate with the only difference being the paper (most of the time) and the perforations.

actually, the main use of the 12c and higher denominations was for international letters. The 12c was also used on mail from Hawaii to pay the 2c ship fee plus the 10c transcontinental rate (it was applied by the agent for Hawaii in San Francisco to mail that originated in Hawaii).

I owned these at one point (but no longer):

Just to be clear, the Stamp Smarter website states the following about the 12 cent usage, "The 12˘ was used primarily to pay the postage on heavy letters and for foreign destinations. A very common usage was to Great Britain, where two 12˘ stamps paid the 24˘ rate.".
