I was cataloging an accumulation, and I came across a Scott 579 (cat $70), one of the better perf types on the rotary versions of the fourth bureau issue of 1922. Perf 11x10. I didn't like it, and when I examined it I decided that it had been created by taking a perf 10 coil and adding fake perfs to the top and bottom, not an uncommon occurrence. The coil comes in 2 types. Type I is Scott 599 (cat 25 cents), and type II is 599A (cat $105). So guess which coil was used to make the fake 579? That's right, a 599A. Some fool took a nice stamp, and proceeded to make a fake of a stamp worth less then the original stamp. And even in the 40's and 50's, a 599A catalogued more then a 579, so it really doesn't matter when it was done. What a maroon.
