I really enjoy discovering the single plate position recuts, of the 1851-57 Three Cent stamps. It's one of the things that make this common issue exciting.
This is the "Recut Button" plate position 10R2L. that's position 10, right pane of plate 2 late state. Not a great example, but it's the first I've identified in my collection.

Hopefully this will illustrate the variety. The first image is a close up of my recut button. The second image is a different stamp without the recut.
What you often see is the recut areas stand out, especially on a stamp printed with a worn plate. That's what my stamp shows. Now look at the button lines on the second image. See that they pretty well match the lines of the collar and bust area.
