Quote: in Muscatine,Iowa history there is a E.S.Williamson listed in the late 19th century, but no Burson or Binson. In the 1863 Report of the Iowa State Agricultural Society to the Governor, I found (under No. 34 Farm Machinery, page 36) "Best Binder, W.W. Burson, Muscatine, Diploma and 5,00" So a Burson did live in Muscatine in the mid 19th century. |

ok guys.so we may finalize that there was a Burson living in Muscatine Iowa in the 19th century.eventhough I researched the name Williamson.
so therefore I need not visit the site <proove everybody wrong> .com
because the "subject cover", and stamp only required further review..
i think I will visit <proove everybody right> .com ..LoL |

My first post! I am interested in grills, having just come by some stamps with these grill impressions on them. For example I have imaged one such grill. How do you know what grill it is? |

Hi Jim, welcome to the forum. There are a lot smarter people than me on here, but when I see a grill (and I'm very much new in dealing with them as well) I go to the Swedish tiger website ( http://theswedishtiger.com/ID65.html) there is a good write up of the how and what's of grills. |

Quote: How do you know what grill it is? The short answer is by measuring them, counting the rows of points. Noting the direction of the points, are they pointing up or down, (towards the face is up, to the back is down). Of course this is a very simplified answer. For a fuller understanding of grills, I'd suggest reading the grill section of the Lester Brookman books, available here to download, here. Volume II covers the grilled stamps. http://www.uspcs.org/resource-cente...nic-library/ D] |

We could just give the answer but like to encourage learning! The learning and discovery is what makes collecting stamps so much fun. If you get stuck, or have any questions, just let us know. Don |

JGreen, welcome to the forum When you count the rows and columns of grill points for the stamp in your pictures, what do you get? X columns across by Y rows up or down. What are the dimensions by your count? X = Y = |

JGreen, on the 3 center, it has 14 columns, so it can only be an E grill or a Z grill. It's an E grill, because the points of the grill are vertical, not horizontal.
Less than 14 columns = F grill Exactly 15 columns = D grill Larger...18 columns and the grill points come up through the front of the stamp....C grill
All over the stamp, and points up through the front = A grill....
Hope this helps, Ray |

JGreen welcome to the forum! This is the best place in the web for answers. There are a lot of very very knowledgeable people here that will give you the truth about your stamp(s) Even if it hurts you. Sometimes the truth hurts! No pun intended. Though some will not inform you they are experts in their own right. I appreciate all the help I get here and I'm sure you will to. When they say "I would send it in for expertizing" send it in. |
