i was watching the military channel last night..about the Tuskeege airman..and they interviewed a Colonel Chuck McGee..that jogged my memory..my base commander in Taranto Italy was a black officer and I think that was him..long story short I pulled out an old first day cover I had mailed to me at the 7230th support squadron and typed in the address..sure enough there was an article on Col McGee and he was the commander at the time..a nice chap..he let me off with just paying damages downtown when it could have gone a lot worse as any one who was in the service knows...Anyway Colonel Mcgee who looked like an old fellow when I was 22 went on to fly missions in Viet Nam as well as Europe and Korea..if I had his address I would write him !

Harry, I guess you can say I met him..standing at attention in front of his desk ..i dont think he knew what to do with me..he was a great flier..not a personnel man..although he had been in Italy during the war and was popular with the local dignataries..he was a Gentleman..perhaps I should pick up his book about the "redtails" during WW2...e mail me what you can use from this end...the fellow from Melbourne in our stamp club likes the newer FDC's you send ! |

Harry & Phil:
Your words ring true, gents. Is it me, or was the prerequisite of a sergeant was never being able to smile?
We had a CSM (Company Sgt-Major) who used to get someone to make him made BEFORE he went on parade, so he'd be in a foul enough mood. Yikes!
Even as a "One-Pip-Wonder", I feared the CSM and the RSM.
