Neat numbered Dial "killer" cancel! These were initially advertised for use in 1875, but seen with various designs throughout the 1870s-80s and beyond, with the number indicating a particular station in a city.

More typically, the device number within the main PO, rather than a station designation.

Ah, good to know John! Is it the same with the Letters as with the numbers?

Yes, in my observations. And station cancels tend to be plainly identified in the CDS. Some large towns went around in circles designating their stations with numbers, then letters, then names, and back, etc.

Still better to take it on a city by city basis with consideration to the time period in question. Numbers and letters can mean several different things. Your mileage may vary!

That cancel is more likely to be on a Scott 125 than a 114. The owner of the stamp should check for a grill and if none is visible, submit it for a cert.

It has a grill. It definitely got my notice on ebay where I purchased it. It is the only 114 I have seen with an 1875+ cancel, and shows that occasionally, stamps did sit in drawers for a few years before being used during the latter 1800s. It currently serves as my "poor man's" 125.
