Londonbus1,
Thanks for your input. I am guessing that you only collect mint stamps? :) |

This issue is a good illustration of the questions we all face on a regular basis as well as the varying responses. There is no real good answer. The only one that is real, in my humble opinion, is where there is a tangible value difference such as in the case of the Loony Tunes issue. Personally, I may go and have gone in each of the directions indicated in the responses here. It all depends on what feels good to me. I have broken many sets in my topical pursuits but I'm a bit more careful where it involves small sheets of varying subjects or souvenir sheets. I do try to find good, clean, used copies where varying subjects are involved simply because they are harder to find. Go with your gut. |

cgrotha, thanks for your feedback. It's been a really good learning experience for me at this forum. I found lots of helpful people here with different ideas and suggestions, some of which, didn't occur to me; all of them are valid and make sense. It's reassuring for a beginner like me to know though, that there are different solutions and that collectors all do things differently depending on their collecting philosophy. I tend to get hung up on details and when that happens I usually find that I'm stuck and can't move forward. With all these excellent ideas and suggestions, I think that I'm in a better position to figure out how to acquire stamps for my collection. :) |

In my wind-and watermill collection I usually collect only that stamp from a set that shows the mill; however, sometimes a whole set of stamps has more info on that mill stamp ( like the Ascension Water Resource set) and then it is nice for a little write up on the apge to go with the set. |

I definitely wouldn't break up a sheet unless there was absolutely no way around it. There will always be a singe mint stamp available somewhere at some time. Part of the fun is cruising the auction sites looking.
Also, when you get your 50 posts and can sell/trade you'll probably find what you need here! |

Many different factors might have to be considered on this question. For example, you would never cut up a sheet of #730 or #731's. But what if they were hinged, ah now they value just dropped out. So what to do. Go ahead and cut them up into singles and now you have just made about ten fold profit with some never hinged ones with maybe one or two hinged ones left over. Sometimes it is how you look at it. |
