As I have been looking through the scotts catalogs when I was in the China section I noticed that the catalog prices are alot higher then alot of the other countries why is this?
Tina, The single biggest reason is that the Chinese economy is strong and the average person in China can now afford to collect stamps and like any other country most collect there own homeland. China has a rich and highly diverse history of postage stamps. So demand for Chinese stamps are high and of course that drives the prices upward.
I'm not an expert with chinese stamps and their values, but...
What's really sought after and valued is the culture revolution era PRC stamps . A lot of the material of that (and earlier) era was destroyed in the "foolishness/madness" of those days. In addition there are several other factors that make these hard to get....Prints of the stamps of that era were somewhat small. Many of the stamps were "glued" on items (making them very non-collectable) etc.
There's also a drive for the older issues... This has a lot to do with chinese people getting wealthier and into stamp collecting. "Buying the goodies home" phenomenan is just normal evolution of any economical uprise. The same happened (and is still happening) with Russian/Soviet stamps.
As for modern chinese issues ... They are very common and cheap. I think many will be disappointed as they don't rise in value as hoped/expected by many.
I have many filipino-chinese friends who have their family roots in China, sending letters through mail is rare as the Mainland chinese find it difficult to write the english words, so they either call up via cell-phone or log on internet. It's a modern world, so result is that a lot of chinese stamps could not go out from China! What I have are mostly Taiwan or Taipei, The few mainland China I got from empty package containers/envelops addressed to my friends
