Japan #148 & 149 from 1915. Used 2003 Scott value is .55 & .80 respectively. Actually your stamps as pictured would be 149 & 148. |

Tina, The Japanese stamps are often found with the chrysanthemum like the one's shown in the top middle of your stamps was used on most stamps of Japan from 1872-1947. Also look for the curreny shown as sen or yen, or appreviations like y, yn, s,or sn. One distictive Japanese charactor shaped like a rectangle with a line drawn straight down the middle is another clue.
Modern issues and the name of Japan as Nippon which is the latin alphabet version of Japanese.

Perhaps more complicated: how do you tell a Chinese stamp from a Taiwanese stamp? |

On Taiwanese stamps you can always read the text "Republic of China". Stamps from mainland China, the People's Republuc just say China, or only have the chinese characters where you should look for the /\ (upside down V) and the rectangle with the vertical bar through it. |

Hi Tina....... The rectangle/box with a vertical line indicates China...not Japan. Korean stamps almost always have "CH". Stamps of Japan almost always have a stylized Chrysanthemum. |

nr-notrare, Can you blow up the Japanese character I was referring to, for Tina. You'll see it right above the Chrysanthemum you had circled.
