I recently ran across some info on the APS site and stamp collecting round up site regarding a fairly new youth based program for elementary & middle school age children. There is an annual fee of $15 to enroll your stamp club in the program. There is no cost to the youth and they receive a membership card, certificate, a pin, and a philatelic birthday present. There is also a quarterly newsletter for the club with helpful hints, activities, & reproducable pages. I have requested info from Janet Houser at APS to enroll my local brick club.

I wonder if the SCF would qualify to enroll since we are internet based?

Here is the response I received from my posting on another stamp forum:

Quote:
Both the All*Star Stamp Club and the Young Stamp Collectors of America are active and have strong memberships.

The All*Star program currently has 50 member clubs, with over 1300 members. The club leader joins the program, and then receives stamps, covers, stamp mounts, hinges, and prizes to share with their club several times each year - all from materials donated to the APS Youth Programs. Newsletters are also sent to the leaders. Once a leader pays the annual fee, each member of his/her club becomes an All*Star member and receives a certificate, an All*Star membership card, and pin. A birthday card and philatelic souvenir is sent to each member annually (as long as the club leader has parental/guardian permission to release the member's name, address, and birthdate to the APS Youth Coordinator.)

The YSCA is an on-line club for individuals. Each youth member receives a welcome packet containing information for the beginning collector, along with stamps and covers (again, from donated materials). We meet here on the Virtual Stamp Club chat room on the first Sunday of each month, from 7-8 pm, Eastern time. All youth members "attending" our meetings receive stamps, covers, and other prizes. YSCA members also receive newsletters, via e-mail, and have the opportunity of attending our "live" meetings, held at the APS winter show and StampShow. We currently have 546 YSCA members, 496 are youth members and 50 are adult supporting members.

Please e-mail me to receive a sample All*Star packet, or even better, to join both of these clubs.

Without a doubt, I think both are worthy endeavors. I'm not sure how the SCF would fit, but maybe some of the other will!

I was thinking if someone whom wants to sponsor youth could join the Youth Stamp Collectors of America or starts their own club for youth would benefit from the All Star Stamp Club. I know we have some young collectors at SCF, they could begin by recruiting their friends & schoolmates.

I received a priority box full of philatelic items from Janet Houser from the APS's All Star Stamp Club! There was a USPS Stamp Price Guide, a large ziplock bag full of on/off paper stamps, a stack of covers and postcards, at least a dozen stamp lapel pins, the latest newsletter, brochures, USPS 2000 Commemorative Yearbook (no stamps), etc. I was quite surprised to say the least on these free materials to help promote stamp collecting to youth.

Now I just need to find some youth....
