One of the coolest things I've found with some of these stamps is when I look at them with my magnifying glass, sometimes different parts of the design, or postmarks seem to "leap off the page". Kind of like the 3-D glasses I use to get. Very cool!
What kind of things keep you in the thick of things?

It's true. I thought I was the only one that was seeing things that way, but I guess not.
I always loved the educational aspect of stamps. It's interesting to find out more about places pictured on stamps, not to mention who the various people were, and what their places were in history. |

Being a former graphic designer (happily, a successful one). The beauty of the engravings on the earlier stamps really turn me on. Allan |

Magnifying an engraved or gravure stamp definitely gives you another perspective of the artistry & printing. There is always a new tidbit of knowledge gleamed from a stamp. One stamp/cover can take you on a new collecting journey. I've become enamored with histories and mysteries surrounding a new item time and time again. It truly is amazing how versatile & universaly our hobby is. |

Quote: I like the fact that young chicks think I'm hot when I tell them I collect stamps! Keep telling yourself that. It's the history for me, not only what the stamp commemorates, or who it depicts, but the time the stamp was issued, what life was like then etc. That's why I only collect older issues. Of course I also like the beauty of them, the engraving etc. And I just like to collect stuff Balf |

I agree with the eductional point of view regarding the collecting of stamps, particularly stamps prior to 1945. The early 20th century stamps have the remnants of colonial eras of the world powers that existed in the 17th an 18th centuries. I am currently working on a lot of stamps that were identified as French West Africa. Once I got to organizing the lot, I have found the 8 different colonies of that federation. What a trip down history's lane and all the transpired to the time that these colonies became independent. |

Like you Phil I'm a Bower bird and love it,when I hit the Victorian gold fields I'm a Bower bird, when I fossick for gems in the Aussie outback or collecting Japanese antiques I'm a Bower bird and when I'm collecting coins and stamps yes you guessed it I'm still a Bower bird. I suppose your guessing what a Bower bird is,well it builds a bower in the long grass and decorates the entrance with blue colored burbles to attract the female of the same species, but unlike the Bower bird this is 33 years this month (Sep 17) with the same mate . Like Balf I also love the history especially on covers,to be precise on very old cover I find them extremely interesting . |

One of the coolest things about Stamp Collecting is the friendships and relationships it brings. Yes the stamps themselves have many, too many, wonderful qualities but the people are what make Stamp Collecting such a wonderful pastime for me. You lot included ! However.... Quote: my wife invited me to her home to see her stamps. That was 46 years ago. .....how could anyone stay in the same place for so long ! Even for stamps. Londonbus1.....DJD, There's a world outside ! |
