Gee, I don't know if I could have done that. I don't have the skill! Then again, that is a very nice cover. I could learn, I could learn. I might have to collect Guatemala stamps now. Always liked Costa Rica stamps. |

Nice!
I assume that today is the last day of the sale, and know that it's amazing how dealers will haggle the last couple of hours before the end -- they'll let stuff go for amazing prices because they may not have made enough money thus far to justify setting up at the sale yet, and because anything they don't sell, they have to lug back to where they came from. |

I have heard that about dealers not wanting to take things home..i guess it depends on the dealer..i spotted a couple of Eastern European ..Europa sympathy issue souvineer sheets in a box on top of the dealers table..VERY FEW PEOPLE that I know of pursue these things..my wife offered the woman the table 8 dollars for the 2 sheets ..about what she would pay if she bought them with shipping on stampwants..the woman refused..she maintained that they were cataloged in Euros from the Michel catalog..i imagine she will have those sheets for quite a while... |

Years ago I was with a friend at a stamp show. He wanted an album for France that he saw. It was used, and in decent condition but not perfect. The dealer wanted $20.00 for it. He wouldn't haggle. So I asked him what he was willing to pay for it, because I had also seen some things at the same dealer that I wanted. Combine a lot of items and you get a good bargain. Anyhow, my friend walked away, (we weren't standing in front of the dealer talking). I went to the dealer and got my stuff, at a bargain, and then I picked up the album and asked the price. I was told since I bought the other stuff I could have it for $10.00. I sort of hesitated, and he said, "Oh what the heck, I don't want to carry it home. Make it $5.00." So I took it for $5.00. My friend was shocked, and amazed that it went so cheap. He probably could have had it for the $10.00 if he had just been willing to make the offer.

Thems fightin words pardner! Today's trivia: That is a Quetzal bird (kayTZAL), the national bird and part of the national emblem. There are none in captivity, not even zoos; they die if not free. BTW, that is one reason for it being so revered in Guatemala. Guatemalan's say they'd rather be dead than in captivity to another nation. The national currency is also called Quetzal. The origin of the name for the bird is most likely from one of the Mayan languages. The "tz" letter combination does not exist in Spanish but is very common in Mayan languages still spoken throughout the country. Marty |

One more thing, the Quetzal on the pedestal stamp only shows a fraction of the length of their tail feathers. Do you see the bird overprint on the 5 airmail stamps? The long line following the bird is accurate to scale for the tail feathers. |

RE: philb 9/26/2009 I went back and got the cover (Guatemala).
That's a great find, the 3 Airmails are what makes it, the advert is the icing on the cake. Its well worth more than $10. There aren't anymore shops like that in Philadelphia.
There is one over in the next town and county easily accessible from the local bus terminal near me, a stamp and coin shop (so called). But they are not in the business of selling stamps or coins. The coins they have there for sale are window dressing to entice people to come in and sell theirs. I think they had a mint sheet of 10 cent flower stamps and a few US FDCs for sale, the FDCs maybe $3-$4 each.
They do not have a run of Harris or Minkus Album supplement pages, nor Scott blank pages. Its potluck what they have in stock on pages. No watermark fluid. They barely stock supplies. Last time I was there they had no Linn's or Coin Wold. He sold me a three week old copy (his own subscription copy) at a big discount. I understand the risk of selling the publications is that people will see the competition out there, and go buy/sell someplace else. The publications educate the public. Why pay $15 for album pages when you can get them for less including postage, or you are guaranteed of getting the year and style page you want at even his price or maybe less? Someone might be advertising to pay higher for a stamp or coin than he is. The front counter is so small, with no room behind it and the shelves behind it, I don't know how they can turn around to drink their coffee---they are in the business only to buy. BlankPage |
