Since I joined this forum few days back, I have met with quite a few very experienced and knowledgeable collectors who are collecting for decades. I'm interested to know how much your collection really worth (monetarily). I met with a person 2 weeks back who has apparently 150K+ worth of US and Foreign stamps (but drives a 99 Honda Accord ). Come on Fellas. Tell us how much your collection worth.

I have been collecting for many, many years. I really have no idea what my collection might be worth. I can remember a few of my more expensive purchases, but noway could I even give a guess what it might be worth. For me, my collection is worth more than money. I enjoy the whole realm of stamp collecting, the hunt, the negotiations, the purchase, studying he stamp and finally mounting them in my albums. One day my daughter will inherit my collection and I'll let her figure that out. Butch |

What, the guy has 750,000 20-cent stamps? I bet you can fit that in a closet with room to spare! Only what, 160 pounds of off paper stamps or so? Clark |

Sfgoda, I understand the "priceless" part. Every collection (whether it is for Stamps or jewellery or antics) is priceless to its owner. However, most of the time people who inherit a very valuable collection do not know the monitory value of the collection; therefore, they call a dealer (or an auction house or go straight to ebay) and get 60-70% less than the market price. I have heard many such stories. Wouldn't it be prudent to have a rough estimate of the total value once in every 3 to 5 years or so? Just asking. |

It's kind of a touchy subject with some collectors. Many collectors start off counting/adding their stamps/values early on, especially the first time they discover "catalogs". Some continue to do so as the years go on and won't hesitate to let you know the current "stats"; but many will stop after a while or will simply keep it to themselves. Asking them the value of their collection is like asking someone what their net worth is. For some collectors, the answer to both questions is actually the same! |

I really don't think there are any "bad" topics or "bad" questions, only things that all of us can learn. This is a nice site where everyone can learn, whether collecting for 40 days or 40 years, whether in possession of 1000 stamps or 1000000 stamps, whether collection is worth 10c or $10 million... k |

Sonalee,to a collector their collection to them is priceless, but as far as value goes that would depend on many things also, what someone is willing to pay also for what your willing to let it go for,but most collectors collect for the sheer pleasure and enjoyment they get out of it,so thats a really hard question for anybody to answer unless like khj said if you catalog the prices when you first start collecting other than that it would be LOTS of work |

Hello sonalee.....
The problem is the difference between "book value"....."perceived value" and "actual value". Very few stamps are actually worth book value. I suspect your friend was quoting book value.....even damaged stamps have a "book value......but will never realize even a small percentage of Scott.
To some, asking about the value of someones collection is similar to asking how much they earn.

I remember as a boy our small group of collector would always ask. "how many stamps do you have now" this was sort of a competition. It never entered our minds the value of stamps. Now in my seventies, with the disposition of my collections looming, I do think of a value somewhat . I am collecting for nine grandchildren so the collections should be fairly equitable,I Think?
