As a discussion point allow me to mention that every senior stamp collector that we're personal friends with are never asked or discuss their collections value. Having said that, I believe I would at least get back what money I put in.
Obviously in the back of their mind they/we have an approx' value which means nothing compared to the over-all pleasure of locating/obtaining the item(s) required.
A general rule, the sort of money spent on stamps roughly indicates it's value (generally speaking). Providing they stamp/item is in excellent original condition and you weren't ripped off buying. |

The most entertaining thing about this thread is watching Phil's love/hate relationship with the topic |

Rather rude question, most tactfully answered by a number of others...
to which I'll only say... tain't polite to ask a woman her age, or the value you place on anything... so as my age goes down, the value of my collection goes up :) hehehe. But the insurance issue is certainly viable. hummm. |

Geez, am I the only person who couldn't care less what my collection is worth? I don't track it, I don't add it up, it's entirely a non-issue. |

I'm with you too cephus but, I am sort of curious on my collection's value sometimes but that would be an illusive number at best (albeit a small one- lol) because there would be just too many variables involved like: insurance value, face value, amount of money invested value or resale value, wholesale value, etc... I just know that without my stamps and all you good folks my life would be pretty boring. I absolutely NEED to buy a Scott specialized catalog(s) so I can catch up on my philatelic knowledge! |

All my stamps are mounted on stock cards, with approximate values written on them. Approximate, because I don't specialise. I have the total of each country written on a header card at the beginning of each country. I then have the grand total written on another card. So I know approximately what the value (albeit catalogue value) of my collection is, but it doesn't matter, because I am never going to sell it. The main reason for valuing the stamps is for the next custodian to know that the collection is really worth "diddly squat" and they won't have to come on this forum and start a thread called "What is my inherited collection worth". LOL Steve |

I'm never selling and once I'm dead, I don't care what my kids do with it. I collect because I enjoy collecting, it's not an investment, it's not for future generations, it's for me. Period. I just get tired of people, as you said, showing up here trying to find out how much money they can make selling someone else's stamps. I ignore them completely. Doesn't matter to me. If they really care, they can go buy a catalog and do the work themselves.
While my collection isn't worth diddly squat, I don't care what it is worth, that doesn't change the enjoyment I get from collecting stamps and that's the only reason I collect in the first place. I like it. |

any honest forum topic that can generate 7 pages of honest responses cannot by any stretch of the imagination be a bad topic. Obviously there are many different opinions about worth and opinions about value and that's what makes this forum work, agreeing to have differences and reallizing that it makes us all stronger for it! (stepping down off my milk crate now) |
